Ik werkte daar graag aan mee en ik was daarna op zaterdag zijn secondant in een simultaan tegen IM Hans Bohm op het Statenplein. Noorland bleek meer gevoel voor de sport te hebben dan hij eerst had laten blijken. Zijn remise haalde de sportpagina's. Het was alleen een zeer warme dag en hij had geen pet op, maar gaf geen krimp ondanks zijn rode hoofd. Hij had gewoon het naar zijn zin gehad. Ron van Maaren, eens schaker bij de Willige Dame, maakte in elk geval een prent over de schakende burgemeester van Dordrecht. Overigens drie jaar eerder was hij ook lid van het erecomit'e dat schaakclub Dordrecht had samengesteld rond het eerste en tot nu toe laatste grootmeestertoernooi in de stad! De toenmalige voorzitter van Dordrecht Jan Flach was de grote promotor van internationaal schaken om ook het eeuwfeest van zijn club luister bij te zetten. Noorland zette zich graag voor de denksport in. In 2000 zwaaide hij af en werd Ronald Bandell zijn opvolger, die overigens in 1977 (!) nog actief was geweest in zijn eerste gemeente Moordrecht bij een simultaan van IGM Donner.
